It’s been a hell of a week. If you’re like me, you’re feeling the stress and strain of a divided nation and an uncertain future. I feel unsafe in this increasingly negative and judgmental world. I’m trying to remember that love, acceptance, and kindness still exist. I just need to actively practice it for myself and for those around me, and hope it will make its way back to me.
Practicing kindness helps us bridge divides and brings us closer to a more inclusive society. It allows us to have meaningful conversations and build connections despite our differences. In a time when the world could really use a generous dose of compassion, I’m going to try to be the example I need. A little extra kindness right now could go a long way, don’t you think? Think of it as self-care. One little act of kindness can have a ripple effect that spreads out among a group of people or an entire community. And then come back to you in spades.
November 13 is World Kindness Day
The purpose of World Kindness Day is to look for and encourage good deeds in our community. It also teaches us that simple acts of kindness have significant power, and when we work together, we can create a kinder world. When participating in World Kindness Day, you prove to yourself and others that kindness is contagious.
Showing kindness doesn’t mean letting go of your morals, values, opinions, or feelings. It’s about embracing others as they are, without judgment, hoping they’ll extend the same grace to you. Practicing kindness allows us to hold our beliefs while still opening the door to understanding. A simple act of kindness can remind us—and others—that we are all human, with feelings and flaws. Compassion and respect don’t compromise our values; they strengthen them.
Are you ready to spread kindness? Genuine acts of kindness don’t need a lot of planning, people, or money. Here are some of the acts of kindness I’m considering:
- Smile and hold a door for a stranger
- Lend or gift a book to a friend or co-worker (this is my favorite idea!
- Write positive Google or Yelp reviews for a local business you love
- Send a positive or encouraging text to five co-workers, friends, or family members
- Write an encouraging note on a restaurant receipt for your server
- Offer to help with a neighbor’s errands
- Offer childcare so friends can have a date night
- Put money in an expired parking meter
- Send an “I appreciate you” card or email to a friend or co-worker
- Surprise co-workers with home-baked cookies or treats
- Make dinner for an elderly neighbor
- Let that guy trying to merge ahead of you in traffic with a wave and a smile
The possibilities are endless. Be creative. Consider what you would like if someone were planning to do something for you.
World Kindness Day is the perfect opportunity to brighten someone’s (and my) day—and maybe even start a chain reaction of good deeds. So, I’ll embrace the spirit of kindness, not just for a day but for always. The world could always use more kindness, and it starts with me.
